We are pleased to announce that we now hold Gas Industry Registration Scheme (GIRS) partial accrediation following a recent assessment by Lloyds.

Gallagher Ltd is currently working in partnership with Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions Ltd to deliver a joint scheme between United Utilities and National Grid to deliver essential water and gas improvements to Ellesmere Port.

The project is progressing well with the first and most difficult phase almost completed.

The £2m scheme, which started last month, has seen the Company laying a 2km 600mm diameter water main along Sutton Way from the Pooltown Road roundabout to the Chester Road roundabout. A 400mm PE gas pipe is being installed in the same excavation at the same time so that only one traffic management plan has been needed, which has minimised disruption.

The Company is hoping to complete the scheme by December this year.

Gallagher has uncovered and removed a unique Edwardian square pipe in Manchester city centre as part of the work being carried out in partnership with Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions Ltd on the United Utilities contract.

The cast-iron find, revealed on Oxford Road during pipe replacements works, is so unusual that it is to be donated to the city's Museum of Science and Industry.

The 26-inch diameter pipe dates back to 1907 and is oblong in cross-section. It was uncovered where Oxford Road crosses the Rochdale Canal bridge. It was engineered in one section and engineers believe it may have been specially made because of the bridge construction and available depth of the road.

We are pleased to report that T&K Gallagher Ltd has been awarded and has started work on the National Grid Northwest Coalition working for Enterprise Utility Services Ltd.

The Company currently has six gas renewal crews working on low and medium pressure network with support teams who are working with Enterprise and National Grid to deliver this work in a considerate and professional manner.

Gallagher recently received certificates of thanks for charity events held during 2008.

Over £6,000 was raised in total for Breast Cancer Care through events such as casino nights and BBQ charity events.

On 3 April 2009 the Company was audited by external auditors from Achilles who assess us to benchmark our management systems and site activities against other utility companies.

Following the recent Category B2 Interim Site Assessment a few weeks ago we have achieved improved scores again for the 3rd year in a row. Please see our new certificate attached.

We are pleased to announce that today Gallagher Traffic Management has been recommended for certification by LRQA to the National Highways Sector Schemes for Quality Management in Highway Works 12D.

 LRQA will continue to check the Company for compliance as part of the ISO9001:2000 Quality Management System certification process.

We are pleased to finish off 2008 with the news that the Company has been awarded certification to the ISO14001 Environmental Management System standard by LRQA.

A cross section of the business was subject to audits and interviews during December 2008 and no major non-conformances were raised, demonstrating that the Company is up to standard.

This is great news for the business and demonstrates it commitment to continual improvement

A Gallagher Ltd employee has been hailed a hero after he saved a mum and her baby from the freezing waters of a canal.

Paul Vasey, 41, rushed into action after hearing a scream come from the Rochdale Canal near Castle Street, Manchester.

He spotted a woman in the water with a baby strapped in a harness on her back.

The young mum had apparently jumped into the icy canal after another child with her had fallen in. She had managed to push the toddler - believed to be her daughter - back on to the bank before beginning to struggle herself.

Paul said: "She was in real difficulty and I was ready to dive in to save her. Thankfully, I was able to reach out and reel her in. The baby strapped to her back was screaming and they were all soaked to the skin. I'm so glad I got there when I did because it could have been a very different story."

Paul, who was working on the Balfour Beatty/ United Utilities contract replacing water mains, is now desperate to contact the mum to check she is OK.

Shortly after the rescue, the shaken mother drove away in a silver people carrier.

"I think she was in shock and so was I," said Paul. "We tried to calm her down and suggested that we call an ambulance, but she refused. She went to her car to find a change of clothes and then drove off. We never even learned her name.

"I'm desperate to find out if they are okay, especially the children.

"The incident has really been playing on my mind since it happened and I've had difficulty sleeping.

"Meeting the family again would put my mind at rest."

Glen Goodwin, of United Utilities, said: "We are all tremendously proud of Paul for his courage and quick thinking.

"It was a freezing cold day and the water must have been almost unbearable. Without Paul's presence, this incident could have ended in tragedy.

"Hopefully this woman will now come forward to confirm she's okay. It would certainly mean a lot to Paul and his colleagues."

The new addition to the fleet includes 15 new Takeuchi TB016 mini excavators, featuring unique extending tracks for added stability when digging. Gallagher Ltd is working partnership with Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions Ltd on the United Utilities AMP4 contract carrying out rehabilitation, repair and maintenance work across the Northwest and the new fleet of Takeuchi mini diggers will be part of that dedicated team.

As a major strategic delivery partners within the utility industry, Gallagher Ltd operate across the UK with main depots in Manchester and Derby. Gallagher has highly trained support teams working on rehabilitation, repair and maintenance contracts, all armed with equipment for quick response service.

As a part of the new fleet, Gallagher Ltd  have also specified Indespension plant trailers fitted with a unique TRACLOCK system specifically designed for Takeuchi, building safety into the equipment used. This safety innovation avoids the need for straps and ensures the risk of instability is eliminated and loading is completed safely & efficiently.

Adding the first of many Takeuchi’s is seen as critical for the growing fleet. Tough well engineered machine specification and easy to use machines are essential for teams working in very tough conditions and Takeuchi’s were considered the best.

On Tuesday 5 August we held the first of our six-monthly health & safety stand down days, led by our directors and supported by our partner Balfour Beatty.

Over 230 employees attended the sessions, in clean and tidy vans, uniforms and PPE, armed with bacon sandwiches and cups of tea!

The sessions included a safety video, our mind safety campaign, performance year to date and improvements planned for the next six months.

Gallagher Ltd has recently invested money in two new John Deere 6230 4-wheel drive tractor units to be used for winching operations on our sliplining schemes in Wigan and Manchester City Centre.

This investment builds upon our committment to provide more efficient and safer equipment for our workforce to use on our schemes.

Gallagher Traffic Management was created as a response to the growing requirement for a dedicated traffic management service, with the ability to coordinate and understand the requirements of the different stakeholders when carrying out essential utilities works.
